Language is acquiredEvery language is acquired without no exception. It is controlled by the environ to a user belongs. English? It can't be different. It is also dominated by the place where the protagonist is located. Do you know why Americans, British, and Australians can speak English well? It's not far from what Koreans speak Korean better than any othere nationals. We the original user of a language have our own linguistic surrounding to which we are exposed for such a long time as to be a natural master of a given language. It's apparent that we don't have any given gene to determine the DNA map of our mother tongue.
They say that Korean spend the biggest amount of money on English in the world. Sounds scornful? OK, don't get discouraged. Let's listen to them opine about the survey. Um... yes, we know why they laugh at the result. Particularly for Koreans, the more money they spend, the less promising their English gets. It was surveyed that Korean educational industry reach 10 billion dollars in a year, which is equivalent to the annual budget of the Seoul Metropolitan government. Purely calculated on the basis of time multiplied by effort spent on the language, Korea has already bought a few states of the U.S. And wonder how many genuine English users does the system produce?
Korean school textbooks are a prime suspectIt's really wonder why the further Koreans backstep the more they invest in the language. Aside from the structural discrepancies those two language have from each other, nothing can distract the linguists more than THE TEXTBOOKS korean students ought to have put up with for about ten years. What's happened to them? What kind of textbooks do they study? You know the glances of the experts' go to the manufacturers. They hold the key to the answer. Ouch. Can you understand the foolish response? How comes do the makers are responsible for the ambitious project of national second language?The clue is very SIMPLE. They lobby for the adoption of the books they make for the school during a semester. It's really a big market. If a teachers blessed them, they were given a very strong cash pipeline through the year, which guarantees the invisible connection between those involved in the transfer. I bet it's NOT a conspiracy theory.
Getting to the point of efficacy of the books, we really wonder how effective they could be for the learners. First of all, take a look at how many words do the junior schoolers get exposed to them? To the researchers' GREAT SURPRISE, they, the freshmen of the middle school, on the average, see them on 10 pages of A4 sized paper. In ither words, the Korean middle schoolers are programmed to meet a book within 5 pieces of paper all the year around. If they are crammred with 8 point writing style, they get into three pieces of paper. WOW. How about calling a bureau of GUINNES world record? It's lucky they don't equip themselves with an intension to dig into the area. Let's time the pages by six years, though they go up as the learners climb the ladder of the class. With whatever liberal view of calculus we delve into the numerics, we don't stop short of 50 pages of paper. It's a real bargain. You can buy English, the lingua franca of the century on the investment of 50 sheets of paper in Korea. Now we understand why they complain that they can't speak English even though they spend ten whole years in the darn lang.
Sound exaggerated? It can, 'cause we don't count their unofficial course of learning English, such as their private books. We have to compare a contemporary of Singapore where English is officially prevalent for objective view of how deficient konglish is. A 13 year old middle schooler in Singapore study the repective subjects like literature, math, social studies, and biology in english written textbooks. We witness the so called IMMERSION Program performed in all the classrooms in the small country. Though he speaks Guandong language at home with their family, it is believed the difference from the two contries originate from the textbooks. Simply put, if korean educational, particulary english program is remapped in the form of that of Singapore, it won't take them to be a fluent global english user as much time as it used to. It SOUNDS really simple, doesn't it? You know a famous adage goes like this; KEEP IT SIMPLE, STUPID. You con go KISS when it comes to learning English, korean folks. Discard all the prejudices and high rise bubbles foamed around the rim of konglish. The sooner the better.
Radical or rather revolutionary overhaul of the old way of thoughts deeply rooted in the konglish should be blown in and sweep the distorted system away within the near future. The DEAD ENGLISH SOCIETY has grown humongus and deformed and gulped the balanced development of the vulnerable korean linguistic sysyem. Don't be misunderstood that we will establish an english dominated society. We'd rather want an english conquered society, free from the abusive hassels hovering around the controversial language. We'd rather convert the 10 billion dollars of linguistic resources into more solid establishement of industry. Many obstacles lie ahead; political correctness of the politbureau system, severance of old rebate system, and resistance from the hangle purists. Hey, yo! Are you already exausted of the long way to go? Pls keep in mind;
